VOTING RIGHTS — In its landmark Louisiana v. Callais decision, the Supreme Court flipped the racial dynamics of Southern politics, declaring unconstitutional the congressional protection for Black voting interests that ensured majority-Black Memphis could elect a representative of its own. Republican lawmakers in Tennessee then split the 9th District among three redrawn districts with 29%, 29%, and 31% Black representation. In one poll, 64% of Black voters in Memphis said the redistricting has made them more likely to vote in the upcoming midterms. One newly formed district now encompasses both the Abyssinian Missionary Baptist Church and Pulaski, where the Ku Klux Klan was founded.
POLICE ACCOUNTABILITY — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police publicly identified seven officers connected to an investigation into racist text messages, with five having resigned and two remaining suspended without pay. The messages reportedly contained repeated uses of the N-word and a competition to see who could pull over the most Black drivers. The texts surfaced during a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation probe into former officer Seth Elliott, who was accused of misusing the Flock Safety license plate recognition system; investigators recovered messages from Elliott's phone and shared them with the department, prompting an internal investigation. U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson said his office is looking into a possible civil rights violation investigation.
