Omar's lawyers challenge DOJ search warrant in immigration fraud probe

GOVERNMENT WATCH — Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C.-area residence was searched by federal agents as part of an ongoing criminal investigation relating to Omar's immigration paperwork. Her lawyers argued that the investigation was politically motivated due to its proximity to the November midterm elections, noting that the Justice Department has historically refrained from this type of investigative activity so close to an election. A federal judge limited how the Justice Department could access Omar's documents in the search because of her role as a member of Congress and the Constitutional protections that affords. The investigators' inquiries include whether Omar or her now-deceased father lied about her age when she obtained citizenship in 2000. Omar has denied the allegations.

The takeaway
A controversial search of a Black congresswoman's home raises the stakes in an already contentious midterm fight and questions about investigative timing weeks before Election Day.

Massachusetts GOP lieutenant governor candidate suspends campaign after DUI arrest

CAMPAIGN 2026 — Shawn Oliver, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor in Massachusetts, dropped out of the race after he was arrested in a suspected drunk driving crash, saying in a post on social media he was ending his campaign because "the election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters." Oliver, a Ward 3 member of the New Bedford City Council, was arrested after an SUV overturned and struck parked vehicles on Dartmouth Street at about 11:40 p.m. Saturday, with five vehicles involved and two sustaining extensive damage. The charges are operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation and speeding. His running mate, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, said he asked Oliver to immediately suspend his campaign and that "when elected, I will formally ask for his resignation."

The takeaway
A last-minute campaign collapse upends the Republican ticket in a competitive Massachusetts gubernatorial race with just over two weeks to Election Day.
