EXECUTIVE POWER — President Donald Trump announced the creation of a three-person committee to investigate allegations of mortgage fraud against Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors. The news came just over two months after Trump notified Cook that he was considering her removal, and less than four months after a divided Supreme Court blocked Trump's initial efforts to fire Cook. Trump's Oct. 7 memorandum directs Cook to attend a closed-door White House hearing on Nov. 5 that will last no more than four hours. She may bring counsel, submit evidence and written witness statements, and answer the panel's questions. Cook has strongly contested the mortgage fraud allegations, and other financial records appear to undermine the Trump administration's claims.
BLACK EXCELLENCE — Angel Reese scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds Friday as the Atlanta Dream beat the New York Liberty 85-83, sweeping their semifinal series to reach the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013. 2026 DPOY Angel Reese has played a crucial role in the team's success this postseason. Atlanta will face Golden State for the championship beginning October 17. Reese joined Atlanta through an April trade from Chicago and delivered a record-setting September performance, leading to her becoming the league's Defensive Player of the Year.
IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT — Politicians and activists are denouncing the Trump administration for initiating a surge in federal immigration enforcement operations less than a month before the 2026 midterm elections. According to a Wednesday report in the Washington Examiner, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has launched an operation expected to last for six weeks that is targeting undocumented immigrants regardless of whether they have a past criminal record. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani wants President Donald Trump to put an end to ICE's operations in the city after an agent-involved shooting injured one person on Thursday. "This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation," Mamdani said. "I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city."
