GOVERNMENT WATCH — A federal immigration officer shot a Dominican man in the neck as he drove in a car with a 5-year-old boy Thursday afternoon, officials said. The 28-year-old man, whom city police identified as Oscar Belgal, survived and was treated at a hospital. City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Belgal was pulling into a parking space when a federal officer in plainclothes approached with gun drawn, followed by another federal officer who also wasn't in uniform. Belgal started to pull the car forward, and then at least one of the officers fired seven rounds, hitting the man below his left ear, Tisch said at a news conference near the shooting site late Thursday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old in his car on Thursday in the Marble Hill neighbourhood before firing multiple rounds. The child was believed to be physically unharmed, the mayor added as he said he has called United States President Donald Trump and would demand that he end all ICE enforcement actions in the city. "I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorise our communities," Mamdani said.
HBCUs & EDUCATION — Aminata "Amina" Seck, the Kentucky State basketball player detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) since Aug. 7, has been released after posting bond, her lawyer said in a statement released Wednesday night. "After two months in immigration detention, Aminata is finally able to reunite with her family and loved ones and begin addressing her urgent medical needs, including the knee surgery she has been unable to receive while detained," Hishem Alsalman, her attorney, said in the statement. Seck was on her way to a basketball tournament in New York. Because of a torn ACL and meniscus, she was wearing a brace and limping through the airport. Seck said she spent a week in isolation because she refused to remove a knee brace she was wearing to treat the injury. "By myself in that room, with nobody — just me and myself, looking at the wall, no books or anything," Seck said at the conference.
Attorneys representing Winston Lee, one of the former fraternity members accused in the Cornell University sexual assault lawsuit, filed a motion Friday in criminal court seeking to disqualify New York Attorney General Letitia James from any future grand jury proceedings. Lawyers for Lee and Lopes argue the remarks show that James prejudged the case and is unfit to conduct an impartial review of the matter.
