ICE Crackdown Continues to Sweep Up U.S. Citizens Across D.C. Region

POLICY & JUSTICE — Federal immigration agents have arrested nearly 20,000 people across Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia since President Donald Trump returned to office. ProPublica identified 506 U.S. citizens detained by immigration agents since January 2025, including children, people filming enforcement operations and Americans who spent days in custody without access to lawyers or relatives. Nearly 60% of those arrested had no prior criminal record, while during the final full year of the Biden administration, ICE recorded fewer than 3,800 arrests across the same region. A federal judge restricted warrantless civil immigration arrests in D.C. unless agents make an individualized determination that a person is likely to escape.

The takeaway
Widening net of immigration enforcement is catching American citizens, raising due-process concerns in federal court.

Justin Jones Calls Black Voters to See Larger Redistricting Fight

Tennessee Republicans passed a redistricting plan aimed at helping the GOP win all nine of the state's U.S. House seats, including one that split a majority-Black district. Rep. Justin Jones, briefly expelled from the state assembly in 2023 for a gun-control protest, urges Black voters to understand the broader fight over voting power.
