GOVERNMENT WATCH — The U.S. Supreme Court began its 2026-2027 term this week with voting rights front and center as major cases loom. The session comes after last term's Louisiana v. Callais decision, which gutted Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, making it far harder for Black voters to prove racial discrimination in voting rules. Advocates warn the new term could bring more challenges to what little remains of voting protections. The court is hearing cases on voting access, Title IX, and immigration that could reshape rights for Black Americans for years to come.
VOTING ACCESS — Tarrant County commissioners approved a plan to reduce the number of Election Day voting sites from 316 to 224, sparking a lawsuit from four women — including city councilwoman Deborah Peoples, retired judge Maryellen Hicks, former councilwoman Kathleen Hicks (all Black), and elected trustee Camille Rodriguez (Hispanic). The lawsuit argues that cuts in the number of polling places disenfranchise more than 1 million registered voters, with the heaviest burden on Black and Hispanic communities. The legal petition asks the court for an expedited hearing and an injunction to restore voting sites before early voting begins.
Vice President JD Vance told Florida Rep. Angie Nixon, a Black woman, 'Get the hell out of here. You don't belong in America' at a Lakeland rally, prompting Nixon to clap back at the University of South Florida.
