VOTING RIGHTS UNDER SIEGE — Republican-controlled Southern states are moving to eliminate congressional districts currently held by Black Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterms, with redistricting push that could erase as many as six held by Congressional Black Caucus members—marking the largest single-election loss in absolute numbers since Reconstruction. In GOP-led states including Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina, Black communities are being split apart and absorbed into majority-white areas. In the South, Black voters lose voting power—states like Alabama, Louisiana and South Carolina concentrated Black voters in the Black Belt, Voting Rights Act protections helped guarantee representation, but weakened protections make Black voters more likely to lose the ability to elect their preferred candidates.
