Nor'easter Floods Northeast; Over 100,000 Without Power

CLIMATE CRISIS — More than 130,000 customers were without power across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic Sunday morning, according to PowerOutage.us. The New York City Housing Authority said one of its employees was killed by a fallen tree in Brooklyn, as the storm pelted the city with rain and strong winds. Extreme amounts of rain – more than 10cm (4 inches) since Friday in some spots in New Jersey – combined with a surging ocean led to flooding amounts not seen for close to a decade, with coastal New Jersey and New York most severely impacted. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said response coordination centers in impacted regions were operating at an "enhanced posture," and teams were on standby in New England in case of widespread outages.

The takeaway
The slow-moving storm has triggered memories of Superstorm Sandy, with federal disaster coordination now active across multiple states.

Battle of the Real HU Sets Stage for Historic HBCU Rivalry

HBCU EXCELLENCE — The "Battle of the Real HU" college football game between Hampton University and Howard University is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., with kickoff set for 3 p.m. ET. The rivalry is one of the oldest and most storied in HBCU football, dating back to 1908. It stems from the friendly debate between Howard and Hampton over which institution is the "Real HU," a tradition that has fueled generations of school pride among students and alumni. Hampton holds a 58-44-1 advantage in the all-time series, while Howard won the most recent meeting, 34-7, celebrating their 100th anniversary this year.

The takeaway
The 101st meeting in the century-old rivalry underscores the cultural and competitive weight that HBCU football carries in Black America.

“Every single significant change that Black folks have been able to secure in this country stands back to us electing people who made decisions on our behalf. We can't think about it as just the midterms or the presidential elections. It's really about civic engagement.”
