Trump EPA Strips Pollution Limits, Threatening Black Communities' Health

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE — The Environmental Protection Agency announced it will repeal rules that limit planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from power plants fueled by coal and natural gas, with experts warning that the effort will take a disproportionately heavy toll on Black communities. Nationwide, Black Americans are most likely to live near power plants and die at the highest rate from their pollution, while being disproportionately exposed to climate-fueled dangers such as extreme heat and flooding. Continued pollution from nearby coal and gas facilities can worsen respiratory and cardiovascular illness, while additional carbon emissions intensify heat, flooding, and other climate threats that strain housing, public health systems, and household finances.

The takeaway
Black neighborhoods face compounding health and environmental crises as federal safeguards disappear.

DoorDash Ordered to Pay $131.5M for Underpaying NYC Delivery Workers

WORKER JUSTICE — DoorDash will pay $131.5 million to settle claims of underpaying delivery workers in New York City; the agreement, which officials described as the largest worker settlement in city history, requires the company to submit to a new monitoring system to ensure compliance with delivery worker pay laws. Most of the settlement will be returned to more than 260,000 workers who were underpaid, not paid or paid late for deliveries by DoorDash. The settlement puts in place a new worker-driven compliance system that gives workers a direct role in identifying violations and will use workers' trip and earnings data to identify underpayment rather than waiting for workers to discover problems after they occur.

The takeaway
Landmark settlement empowers delivery workers with enforcement tools and direct oversight of platform compliance.

Howard University Launches National Search for 19th President

HBCU LEADERSHIP — The Howard University Board of Trustees announced the launch of a comprehensive national search for the university's 19th president, beginning a deliberate process to identify an exceptional leader to guide Howard through its next chapter of academic excellence, research, student success, and global impact. Howard has opened a presidential search survey that will remain available through October 30, with feedback collected through the survey and stakeholder meetings used to create a Presidential Leadership Profile that will guide recruitment and evaluation of candidates. The Board has retained Russell Reynolds Associates, an executive search and leadership advisory firm, to support the national search and identify an exceptional and diverse pool of candidates.

The takeaway
Howard opens its community to shape the vision of its next leader as the HBCU charts its institutional future.
