Insurance 'Redlining' Deepens Homeownership Gap for Black Families

LAND & LEGACY — Homeowners in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods are disproportionately impacted by high homeowners insurance premiums, costing them hundreds of dollars more per year on average and potentially tens of thousands of dollars more over the lifespan of a mortgage. Over a typical 30-year mortgage, homeowners in majority Black areas pay $15,000 more on insurance premiums. States with the highest premium gaps in Black neighborhoods include Michigan (leading the nation), Pennsylvania (57%), New Jersey (22%), Massachusetts (20%), and New York (19%). These gaps make it more difficult for people in Black and Hispanic communities to afford housing and build generational wealth.

The takeaway
Modern discrimination through insurance pricing extends the legacy of historical redlining into today's wealth-building calculations.

Houston Black Churches Demand Community Benefit from AI Data Center Growth

TECH & INNOVATION — Dr. Timothy Sloan, senior pastor of The Luke Church, said he is not opposed to data centers in Black communities but is opposed to Black communities bearing the burden of economic development without sharing in its benefits. The National Black Church Initiative, representing 150,000 African American and Latino faith communities, supports data-center development when projects include legally enforceable Community Benefit Agreements. Research has documented data centers being built near predominantly Black communities, where residents have raised concerns about pollution, water use, electricity costs, and whether promised economic benefits will reach people living closest to facilities.

The takeaway
Black faith leaders are raising the stakes for AI's expansion in their neighborhoods: equitable investment or no consent.
