REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE — The family of Tierra Walker, who died after she could not get an abortion in Texas, is suing doctors and state officials including Attorney General Ken Paxton. It is the first lawsuit over a death linked to an abortion ban. Walker, who died of preeclampsia at age 37 when she was 20 weeks pregnant, filed suit in Bexar County District Court accusing Ken Paxton, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and several doctors of deliberate indifference and medical mistreatment. Throughout her many hospital stays, Walker's doctors never discussed with her the possibility of or options for terminating her pregnancy. The lawsuit says Paxton and other state officials have imposed a merciless blanket prohibition on abortion that intimidates doctors into inaction and breeds extreme fear among Texas' medical establishment.
FAMILY CAREGIVING — 5.4 million children and adolescents in the United States are caregivers, and a growing number of Black boys and young men have stepped into the role of caregiver, but society has not caught up to their needs, leaving their contributions invisible. One 23-year-old was cooking for his family and navigating adults' health care needs before he was a teenager, bathing his grandmother and managing her oxygen tubes by age 10, and later helping to lift his paralyzed uncle's body. Although Black and Hispanic teen girls are disproportionately providing family care compared to white youth, Black boys and young men are also becoming the main caregivers in their families.
VOTING & POWER — The Trump administration proposed a dramatic overhaul of the 2030 Census that would remove key racial and ethnic data and filter immigrant data based on citizenship status. Many civil rights advocates, researchers and supporters of the census race question warn the administration's plan puts at risk future federal data used for redistricting, enforcing the Voting Rights Act and other antidiscrimination protections. Trump officials are proposing to stop using the census to ask about people's race and ethnicity, a topic that the national tally has included since the first count in 1790.
