Teen Charged in Kyle Bickham's Death as Chicago Demands Transit Safety

JUSTICE & PUBLIC SAFETY — A 15-year-old girl has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Kyle Bickham, a 29-year-old Chicago-area man who police say was pushed from a moving CTA Red Line train. She faces first-degree murder, murder during the commission of a forcible felony, mob action, and aggravated battery to a transit passenger. Bickham was pushed from the train near the 69th Street station during an altercation about 2:40 p.m. Monday and landed on the third rail before being struck by an oncoming train. His family remembered him for his personality and joy, noting his love of poetry and time with his nieces.

The takeaway
Transit riders deserve safety; Bickham's family deserves accountability for a young man taken at a life-changing moment.

Captain Nia Gilliam's Memoir Captures 9/11 From the Cockpit, Inspires Next Generation

RESILIENCE & LEADERSHIP — A 25-year-old co-pilot ready to depart Newark Liberty International Airport for Boston on 9/11 witnessed black smoke clouding the World Trade Center and was told to hold her position by air traffic control. That pilot, Nia Gilliam, co-founded Sisters of the Skies, a nonprofit organization to help the next generation of Black women and girls in aviation. Now one of fewer than 200 Black women pilots in the United States, Gilliam has released her memoir "Cleared for Takeoff," tracing her path from childhood dreams to breaking barriers in a white, male-dominated industry.

The takeaway
From trauma to purpose: Gilliam transforms what could have ended her aviation career into a mission expanding opportunity for Black women in the skies.
