RACIAL VIOLENCE — Over the past year, at least 10 Black people have been found hanging from trees, with some deaths ruled suicides that families question. Families, civil rights advocates and organizations including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund have called for greater transparency, independent oversight and thorough autopsies, saying the nation's history of racial violence and lynching makes a careful, transparent investigation especially important. Cases span from Georgia to Mississippi to Michigan to North Carolina, yet in many of the cases, local law enforcement and medical examiners have ruled the deaths suicides, citing a lack of evidence pointing to foul play or criminal involvement. The report highlights a recurring pattern of 'systemic neglect' where local coroners prematurely close cases as suicides without comprehensive investigations.
GLOBAL RECKONING — By 164 votes to one, Member States on Friday endorsed a resolution promoting map projections that more accurately reflect the true size of continents – the culmination of an African-led campaign against the 16th-century Mercator projection, still the most widely used map in the world. The United States cast the sole vote against, dismissing the initiative as part of a 'radical ideological project.' The 'Correct the Map' resolution adopted by the UN general assembly on Friday aims to address a colonial-era injustice that has visually shrunk Africa for 450 years, shaping how the continent is perceived in media, education and policy around the world. The vote encourages governments and institutions around the world to replace the traditional Mercator map, commonly used since the 16th Century, with the Equal Earth projection that advocates and geographers say shows locations more accurately.
Independent House candidate Andre Easton refuses to call the Bronx's NY-15 'the poorest congressional district' in America—to him, it's the most exploited. The 39-year-old educator said 'It's important that we don't speak about the people in the Bronx as though they themselves are victims of their own moral individual failings,' noting the district 'is made poor by the policy choices that continue to maintain the wages at the level that they are.' Running under the Party for Socialism and Liberation, Easton is part of a wave pushing Democrats beyond centrist appeals.
