HEALTH EQUITY — Dr. Heavenly Kimes says her son's legal trouble inspired her mental health advocacy and creating crisis centers in underserved communities. In an exclusive conversation with theJasmineBrand's "Visionaries Only" entrepreneurship series, Kimes discussed how her son's encounter with the legal system prompted her to research the connections between mental health and incarceration. Her son, Damon Kimes Jr., was arrested in Georgia in February 2023 on an aggravated-assault charge involving a Georgia State University police officer. Kimes identified greater access to mental health crisis centers as one of the most significant needs. She described creating crisis centers as an ongoing goal and said her advocacy is intended to reach not only Black communities but underserved communities more broadly.
TECH & JUSTICE — Nearly 11 years after a 107 mph crash, Snapchat is finally going to trial over its speed filter. The trial is scheduled to begin November 2, 2026. The lawsuit alleges that Snapchat's speed filter, which let users superimpose their real-time speed onto photos and videos, encouraged then-19-year-old Christal McGee to speed on Tara Boulevard in Spalding County on September 10, 2015, when she slammed into Wentworth Maynard's car at more than 100 mph in a 55 mph zone. The collision forced Maynard's vehicle into an embankment and left him with a permanent traumatic brain injury. The company eventually removed the Speed Filter in 2021 after years of controversy and lawsuits involving crashes allegedly connected to the feature.
BUSINESS WATCH — Uber has announced the shutdown of its operations in Nigeria and Uganda, ending its services in the two African markets effective September 2, 2026. The move leaves Uber operating in only four African markets: Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, following its exit from Tanzania in 2022 and Ivory Coast in 2025. The capital saved from global headcount reductions and operational exits will be redirected toward core ride-sharing tech, delivery services, and autonomous vehicle research. The company said it will support riders and driver-partners in both markets through the transition phase, with their immediate priority supporting drivers, riders, and local team members throughout this transition.
