VOTING RIGHTS WIN — Longtime Kansas City Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II may keep his seat after the Missouri Supreme Court decision to nix a new congressional map written for November's election that carved up Kansas City to make Cleaver's seat harder for Democrats to win. Missouri voters will decide the fate of a Republican-drawn congressional map after the state Supreme Court unanimously blocked the new districts from being used in November. The state will instead use its 2022 congressional districts for November's general election, even though candidates competed in last month's primary under the newer boundaries.
BLACK EXCELLENCE — The DMV is getting ready for a major celebration of Black culture, music and community as Afro Plus Fest returns this Labor Day weekend with a much bigger footprint. The three-day festival runs Sept. 4-6 at the Northwest Stadium Complex in Landover, Maryland, expanding from the sold-out, one-day inaugural event that drew an estimated 20,000 people to Washington, D.C., last year. This time around, organizers are projecting as many as 120,000 attendees. The festival will center several genres of music, including Afrobeats, soca, dancehall reggae, R&B, amapiano, and Hip-Hop, with co-headliners Wizkid, Davido, and Alkaline joined by Latto, Sexyy Red, Lil Baby, Chief Keef, Adekunle Gold, Olamide, and Tiwa Savage across two stages.
POLITICAL POWER — The fight inside the Brooklyn Democratic Party continues as the New Kings Dems, a primarily white-led reform group, filed a lawsuit to halt rule changes put forth by Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair and Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the first Black and Haitian woman to hold the position. Bichotte Hermelyn proposed new rules that would allow newly elected officers and representatives from every district to have full voting rights. The committee voted on and passed the new rules Aug. 25 at a contentious meeting held at the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. The feuding factions took the matter to court Wednesday, Sept. 2, with the initial hearing held in Kings County Supreme Court. Bichotte Hermelyn requested a delay so that each district leader could secure legal representation, and the hearing was pushed back a day.
