GOVERNMENT WATCH — Over 4,000 National Guard troops, pulled from 15 states and the District, have patrolled neighborhoods in Washington, D.C., beginning with President Trump's deployment in August 2025. Estimates indicate that the deployments could cost taxpayers $1.7 billion by the end of 2026. The ACLU and its affiliates across the country are calling for the remaining out-of-state National Guard members to be sent home and for the broader military deployment in Washington to end, arguing that the District has no emergency requiring troops on its streets. National Guard members have been pulled away from their civilian jobs, schools, and families, creating disruptions for households and employers and, in some cases, genuine economic hardship.
POLICY & JUSTICE — Commissioner Rodney Ellis is pushing for an additional $4.5 million investment in community-based safety programs as Commissioners Court moves toward critical Fiscal Year 2027 budget decisions. HART dispatches interdisciplinary, unarmed teams to eligible nonviolent calls, while RISE — Relentless Interrupters Serving Everyone — uses trained "credible messengers" to defuse disputes and discourage retaliation. RISE has interrupted at least 186 potentially violent conflicts, and in Cypress Station, where both RISE and HART have worked simultaneously, overall crime has fallen 36% and family violence 48% since 2023.
BLACK EXCELLENCE — The 2025 Cypress Lakes team etched its way into school history: in their 16th varsity season, the Spartans broke through and made the playoffs for the first time ever. The receiving corps has deep threat Davion Griffin and junior Arquaris Crowder, while linebacker Ja'Merce Johnson leads the defense as the returning Defensive Newcomer of the Year. This tight-knit Spartans group is desperate to prove last year wasn't a fluke as they aim for a second-straight playoff appearance.
