HBCU IN CRISIS — Saint Augustine's University, a 158-year-old HBCU in Raleigh, will not offer classes or educational programs during the fall 2026 semester as it works through bankruptcy and an uncertain future. The decision marks a reversal as university leaders had planned to launch eight online, nondegree programs in September covering subjects including programming, artificial intelligence and public health. A U.S. Bankruptcy Judge questioned whether the financially troubled HBCU could deliver on promises to prospective students and raised concerns about spending limited resources on classes while the institution remains in bankruptcy. Saint Augustine's is reportedly $74 million in debt.
