HBCUs & EDUCATION — More than 12 private colleges and public universities have either reduced or eliminated Black programs studies departments and majors. A Washington Post report found that over a dozen U.S. colleges and universities have scaled back or downright eliminated Black, African, and African American studies departments and majors over the past two years. The University of Iowa, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Kansas are among institutions that have closed or consolidated African American studies units. Nationwide completions for African American studies degrees dropped to the lowest levels in two decades — a number administrators now cite as justification for the next round of cuts.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is calling for immediate accountability after a Mississippi investigative report revealed Senatobia Police Chief Harold Vanderford allegedly sent text messages containing multiple racial slurs. According to a report by Mississippi Today, the nonprofit news organization obtained private text messages in which Vanderford used racist slurs more than a dozen times. In one text, Vanderford allegedly wrote that he "almost beat a [n-word] [and] a white woman's [a**] a few minutes ago." Vanderford oversees an officer under investigation in the fatal shooting of a 1-year-old Black child.
