POLICY & JUSTICE — Black museums confront an old financial problem under new political circumstances as President Donald Trump's administration has targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the federal government and pushed for changes in how the Smithsonian presents race, slavery, and other aspects of American history. Museum leaders welcome federal funding but do not expect any in the current political climate. Some Black museum leaders are thinking much bigger, with the CEO of the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum describing plans for financial independence.
TECH & ACCOUNTABILITY — Meta agreed to pay about $18 billion as part of a settlement to resolve a multistate lawsuit claiming that it intentionally designed addictive platforms that harmed young people's mental health. The District of Columbia is guaranteed more than $90.3 million and could ultimately collect nearly $129.4 million. The settlement requires Meta to add new safeguards for young users on Instagram and Facebook, including a combined two-hour daily time limit for children, with mandatory breaks after 15 minutes of continuous use and again at 60 and 90 minutes.
