Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon Wins Florida Senate Primary

POLICY & JUSTICE — Florida State Rep. and democratic socialist Angie Nixon won the Democratic Party's Senate primary in Florida on Tuesday, becoming the latest in a growing number of left-leaning candidates to have scored a major upset against a well-funded rival. Nixon secured 56.0% of the votes with nearly all ballots counted, defeating her rival Alex Vindman who received 44% despite being a significantly better-funded candidate with over $16 million raised. Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, will face GOP Sen. Ashley Moody in the general election.

The takeaway
A grassroots-powered victory signals a shift toward progressive organizing in one of America's most conservative-leaning battleground states.
