VOTING RIGHTS — Debbie Wasserman Schultz won the controversial Democratic primary for Florida's 20th Congressional District on Tuesday night amid an outcry that her candidacy was stifling Black representation in Congress. The legislature eliminated the Black-majority status of the district earlier this year in a rare mid-decade redistricting move that was part of a nationwide strategy President Trump pushed last summer to prevent losses in the 2026 midterms. Depending on the outcome of the primary election, the number of Black representatives from Florida could go down to two, a historic low. The state's 24th Congressional District in Miami-Dade remains the only Black-majority district left in Florida, and all candidates for that seat are Black.
JUSTICE & ACCOUNTABILITY — Harris County Commissioners Court unanimously approved $2.52 million to fund an independent investigation into the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston father of three who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Magnolia Park. The funding will support the Harris County District Attorney's Office investigation for the next three years and comes amid continued calls from Salgado Araujo's family and community members for answers about what happened. The investigation is necessary while ICE continues to withhold information about the shooting.
