Supreme Court Gutts Voting Rights Act, Threatens Black Political Power

VOTING RIGHTS CRISIS — The Supreme Court's 6-3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais has eviscerated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, clearing the way for Louisiana and other states to engage in discriminatory vote dilution practices. By weakening Voting Rights Act protections against racial discrimination in redistricting, the Supreme Court has paved the way for the largest-ever drop in representation by Black members of Congress. The ruling struck down a congressional map that allowed Black voters in Louisiana to elect candidates of their choice.

The takeaway
This decision—contradicting the text of the Voting Rights Act and Congress's will—is one of the most consequential setbacks for multiracial democracy in a generation.
